Monitor UK

Bringing together article processing charge data from UK higher education and research institutions.

Monitor UK helps higher education institutions (HEIs) review and interrogate national data relating to the publication of open access (OA) outputs. Variables include university, publisher, value of article processing charge (APC) and type of publication, including both ‘gold’ and ‘green’ publication routes.

Universities can use this information to benchmark and plan their own scholarly communications.

Monitor UK takes most of its data directly from its partner product Monitor Local although it is also possible to manually enter institutional data.

Benefits for institutions

  • Gives evidence to help you advocate and plan for OA
  • Understand average article processing charge values across UK publishers and institutions
  • Analyse how many APCs were for articles in pure OA journals versus hybrid journals
  • Gain insights into the different variables involved in ‘gold’ and ‘green’ open access
  • Comply cost-effectively with the open access policies of research funding bodies, notably the policy on open access and the Research Excellence Framework (REF)

"[Monitor UK] provides us with an opportunity to fundamentally improve the service offerings to our scholars, to engage with the wider community and to better meet the requirements of funders and other external stakeholders. It represents the community coming together to find a service to meet these challenges."

David Walters, open access officer, Brunel University
